Project First Rate (PFR) is a partnership between union contractors and union tradespeople to promote quality craftsmanship with pride, integrity and commitment to our community. Members of Project First Rate understand the importance of building the very best for the Rockford area, giving our community safe, sustainable places in which to live, work, and play.

Project first rate contacted me because they were looking for an update to their iconic logo that was universally recognized throughout the region for almost 30 years.
When I dove into the project the very first thing that had to change was the ribbon. The color red symbolizes second place not first like the name implies. This change based on closely held traditions would be the anchor for the new mark. I added a color shift in the blue to give the mark some dimension as if the ribbon was domed. I used all caps in the logotype and scaled it to support the domed effect of the ribbon. PFR is made up 20 building contractor and building union organizations. To help convey this fact I gave the ribbon 20 points each one representing one piece of the overall organization.
With the ring that contains the ribbon we changed out the text “union contractors, union craftsmen” to “building community, building unity” to put the focus on the mission rather than the ones completing the mission. I think that this small change made a huge difference in the way that it relates to the community.
Project First Rate has played a vital roll with construction projects that define our local area like the state-of-the-art Morgan Street Bridge and the historic Coranado Theater.
